Tip: Here’s how many players think: If I hit this 14, I risk busting my hand right here and now. But maybe the dealer has a 6 in the hole. If I don’t take a hit, my hand still has a chance. Maybe the dealer’s hand will bust.

But that 14 you are holding is already in dire jeopardy when the dealer shows a 10 up. You must fight for the hand’s survival by taking the hit, giving it a chance of becoming a stronger hand against that 10. With a 14 against a 10, you must fight to the death.

On the other hand, if the dealer’s upcard is 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6, and you are holding a stiff hand, you should stand. Since the dealer must hit his stiff hands, and chance busting even when you are stiff, hitting your weak hands is not advantageous against these weak upcards.

Players are naturally afraid to hit these hands because every one of them could bust (make a total of 22 or more) with a single hit. But when the dealer has a high card (7, 8, 9,10, or ace) showing, your best odds of blackjack come from hitting and giving yourself a chance of making a better total.

Tip: This is the basic logic of casino blackjack. There are exceptions to these guidelines, as the actual basic strategy decision for any given hand is determined by working out all of the mathematical probabilities. But if you just consider this logic when studying the basic strategy charts, the pattern will become clear to you and it should not be too difficult to memorize.

A team of professional blackjack players whose founders were from Czechoslovakia that had been playing in Las Vegas flew all of their members to Atlantic City to take advantage of this new surrender rule. Johnny C.j now a legendary player who joined the team in 1981, plays high-stakes blackjack to this day and continues organizing teams of professional players. The Czechs, the Hyland teams, and the MIT teams would be the scourge of the casino industry for decades to come. College kids found that they could pool their money, play blackjack with a modicum of intelligence, and get rich quick.

More than one miner averred that he would rather lose to the Madame than win from somebody else.” A few years after opening the Vingt-Et-Un, Madame Dumont joined forces with another gambling house operator to open a much larger establishment in Nevada City called Dumont’s Palace. This was a full-fledged casino with roulette, faro, and chuck-a-luck games in addition to twenty-one. Eleanor Dumont, not yet thirty years of age, who had started out with nothing more than a deck of cards, had become one of the most successful twenty-one players in history.
In 1857, as the gold was petering out in the Nevada City area mines, she moved to Columbia where the gold strikes were plentiful. Despite prospering in Columbia, in 1859 she moved again, this time to Virginia City, and again in 1861 to Pioche, fol¬lowing the Nevada gold strikes. In Pioche, she began dealing twenty-one in a saloon owned by a man named Jack McKnight, fell in love, and married him. Shortly after their marriage, McKnight deserted her, disappearing along with all of her money.
Eleanore Dumont went back to dealing twenty-one and following the gold strikes.
She was always on the move, but now traveled with a pistol-not to protect herself from the gamblers whose money she won, but because she hoped to someday cross paths with Jack McKnight. She moved to Fort Benton, Montana, then to Helena, then to Salmon, Idaho, back to Nevada City, and finally to Bodie, California.

In the mid-eighteen hundreds, San Francisco’s Barbary Coast district had more than one thousand gambling houses, most being saloons, brothels, or some combination of saloon, brothel, hotel, and casino. We know that twenty-one was being played in the wild western states during the eighteen hundreds, and we can assume that it had come from the more civilized East, where casino gambling was technically illegal in most states, but still widespread. Some of the professional gamblers who came west with the ‘4gers were likely Mississippi riverboat gamblers looking for fresh suckers.
The first steam-powered paddleboats had appeared on the Mississippi and Ohio rivers in 1811, and by 1833 there were more than five hundred boats in service. According to Alan Wykes (The Complete Illustrated Guide to Gambling, Doubleday, 1964), by the l830s, approximately fifteen hundred professional gamblers were working the steamboats that ran between New Orleans and Louisville. That’s an average of three cardsharps on every boat. Says Wykes: “At first the cardsharp was an outcast … but as the boats’ officers became aware of the large potential income that lay at the tips of the cardsharps’ fingers … they became his accomplices.” The riverboat captains were soon competing with each other to attract not only the slickest cardsharps to their boats, but the wealthy travelers who were known to like a leisurely game of twenty-one or faro to pass the time on their journey. But with all the boats, and a growing army of cardsharps, the competition for suckers was getting worse every year. So, when gold was discovered in California in 1849, many of the gamblers went west to mine the pockets of the miners.
Eleanore Dumont is the first known professional twenty-one player in history. She was widely respected by the miners and gamblers who played against her because she was believed to deal an honest game. For all we know, she may have dealt completely on the square, and simply beat her customers as a result of the “house edge.” But most traveling card gamblers of that time did use sleight of hand, which was much more of an arcane art than it is today. Surely, there were other blackjack specialists before her, but none whose names are known and who specialized in the game of twenty-one exclusively. Throughout a gambling career of almost thirty years, Madame Mustache played only one game-twenty-one-and in the gambling dens of the old West, she became a legend in her lifetime.

As a constant Blackjack tournaments player I can say that at least one person at the table is likely to  know some degree of Basic Strategy. If you have an opportunity to show that you seemingly don’t, then by all means take advantage of this. I’ve asked a floorperson hovering over my game, “What does the book say?” counless times over the years, knowing full well “what the book says,” and what I would end up doing no matter what his or her answer was. By the way, I wouldn’t call a floorperson’s attention to a calculated blackjack strategy variation, but if he’s staring down at my game I might suggest that the reason I’m standing on my 12 against the dealer’s 2 is that “I have a hunch a picture card is coming.” Or, “every single time I get this hand and draw a card, I bust.” Casino personnel are used to hearing oddball explanations for why gamblers play a certain way. In other words, when in Rome act like a Roman.
Call me an actor, but all of these little things add up and collectively go a long way towards leaving the door open for future visits to that same casino. After a while, the  of it becomes the game within a game at which you instinctively try to become more and more proficient in playing the game of online blackjack.

On shoe games in virtually all casinos, the dealer tallies up and at nounces the total of each player’s hand as the player draws more cards. Not many people who think they can play blackjack know this. Make use of this audible while feigning disinterest in cards other than your own whenever possible. If you see or hear that a player has a total of 14 , and then after asking for a card the dealer announces that the player new total is 19, you know a 5 must have been dealt. A crafty one is a situation in which you notice another player has a total of 12. If the player draws a card and the dealer almost immediately collects the cards and the bet, you know without even looking that the last card dealt had to be a 10.  Add to your running count as appropriate. Anytime in Blackjack tournaments you can establish lack of interest in other players’ cards while still maintaining a correct count—especially in front of a boss—is a golden opportunity that should never be passed up.
